Clinical Background

A Career Built in the Field

Dr. Shermer's clinical career spans more than two decades in emergency medicine, with a particular focus on prehospital care, resuscitation, and the medical oversight of EMS systems. As an EMS Medical Director in the state of Mississippi, he has worked directly alongside paramedics, A-EMTs, and first responders — not from behind a desk, but on the front lines of emergency response, where protocols are tested in real time and every second matters.

His clinical expertise spans the full spectrum of emergency medicine: from cardiac arrest resuscitation using AHA ACLS and BLS guidelines, to advanced airway management, hemorrhagic shock, traumatic brain injury, obstetric emergencies, and mass casualty incident command. He has served as an ACLS Instructor for the American Heart Association, certifying hundreds of healthcare providers in life-saving resuscitation techniques.

Dr. Shermer has been a consistent advocate for raising the standard of prehospital education in underserved and rural communities, where access to high-quality simulation training has historically been limited. This advocacy is what ultimately led him to build EMS-MedSim — a platform designed to bring the same quality of clinical simulation available at major academic medical centers directly to the providers who need it most, wherever they are.

Teaching Philosophy

How Dr. Shermer Teaches

Dr. Shermer's approach to teaching is rooted in the same philosophy that guides his clinical practice: meet people where they are, and never stop asking why. He believes that memorizing a protocol is not the same as understanding it — and that the difference between a good provider and a great one lies in the ability to think critically when the situation doesn't match the textbook.

In the classroom and in the simulation environment, Dr. Shermer uses real patient stories, clinical reasoning exercises, and Socratic questioning to guide students toward understanding rather than rote recall. He has a particular gift for making complex pharmacology and pathophysiology accessible without oversimplifying — a balance that his students consistently describe as transformative.

His bedside manner as a teacher mirrors his bedside manner as a physician: calm, patient, and genuinely curious about each student's individual learning journey. He creates an environment where no question is too basic and no mistake is a failure — only a teaching moment. Students who have trained under Dr. Shermer often describe feeling not just prepared for their certification exams, but truly ready for the demands of real-world prehospital care.

EMS-MedSim is the digital extension of this philosophy — an always-available, AI-powered training environment that reflects Dr. Shermer's conviction that great EMS education should be engaging, evidence-based, and deeply human. Every scenario, every branching decision, and every piece of feedback in the platform has been designed with the same care he brings to every student he has ever taught in person.

"Behind every protocol is a real patient. My job as an educator is to make sure that when you're standing over that patient, you're not just reciting steps — you're thinking, adapting, and leading."

— Chester Shermer, M.D.
